Virtual - Friday Night Film Discussion: "Welcome to the Sticks" *For Adults

Friday, November 3, 2023

Welcome to our Friday Night Film Discussions! Today, we’ll be discussing “Welcome to the Sticks" a record-breaking comedy which smashed the box office in France, where it was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Cesar Awards.

 The way it works:

PRIOR to the meeting (whenever works for your schedule), watch "Welcome to the Sticks" on Kanopy - one of the library's video streaming service - and then come to the meeting prepared to discuss!

You will need an Ashland library card or a Boston Public Library e-card to use Kanopy. Click here to access Kanopy or for more info on the BPL e-card (see if you are eligible and then register - you can use any of BPL's online resources with this card!).

Please register to receive the program link - which will be in your confirmation and reminder emails (check your spam folder for them!). Contact ashlandprograms@minlib.net with any questions.

Synopsis:

Although living a comfortable life in a charming town in the South of France, Julie has been feeling depressed for a while. To please her, her husband Philippe tries to obtain a transfer to a seaside town on the French Riviera, at any cost.

When Philippe is caught red-handed while trying to scam an inspector he is immediately banished to Bergues, a distant town in the Far North of France. Leaving his child and wife behind, Philippe leaves for Bergues, a dreadfully cold place inhabited by hard-drinking, unemployed rednecks speaking an incomprehensible dialect called Ch'ti. But Philippe soon realizes that all these ideas were nothing but prejudices and that Bergues is not synonymous with hell…

Audience Award winner at the Hamburg Film Festival. Nominated for Best European Film at the Goya Awards and the Gaudi Awards.
