[ARCHIVED] Downtown Water Main Projects - Main St. and Summer St. - Update 8/16/19

Downtown Projects - Update 8/16/19

Main street: Contractor is in the bacteria testing phase of the project. Once all samples pass the bacteria testing they will start switching over buildings to the temporary water main. We are waiting for the results of the samples taken this morning. The results should be available Monday or Tuesday.

Summer Street: Contractor has completed the temporary water pipe installation and has taken water samples. We are expecting results back early next week. Once the temporary water pipe bacteria samples pass the testing the contractor will begin switching houses over to the temporary pipe. Once that is completed they will begin the water main replacement work.  Contractor has started installation of side street gate valves to allow the new water main installation.

Homer Ave. – Gas Main Installation – Eversource Energy started their project on Friday, 8/9/19.  They are installing a new gas main down Homer Ave. (from Main Street to Alden Street).  One lane will be open to traffic.  We expect this project to take up to 4 weeks.

Thank you for your patience.

Downtown Projects – Update 8/9/19

Project 1 (Main Street Water Main Cleaning and Lining) – The Contractor, Biszko, will be disinfecting the temporary water main along with some possible pit excavation.  Beyond that, no other work until the bypass pipe passed the water test.  There is a small chance that the Contractor will be able to start switching over the water services to the temporary water main at the end of the week.

Project 2 (Summer Street Water Main Replacement) – The Contractor, A.Vozzella, will be installing new valves in the existing water main on Park Street, Esty Street, and Cherry Street.  If necessary, Linden Street will receive a new water valve as well.  Water service will be temporarily interrupted during this work.

The tentative shut down schedule for Vozzella next week is:

Monday, Park St

Tuesday, Esty St

Wednesday, Cherry St

Thursday, Linden if needed

Project 3 (Homer Ave. – Gas Main Installation) – Eversource Energy started their project on Friday, 8/9/19.  They will be working on Saturday, 8/10/19 as well.  They are installing a new gas main down Homer Ave. (from Main Street to Alden Street).  One lane will be open to traffic.  We expect this project to take up to 4 weeks.

All three projects involve construction in the intersection of Summer/Main Street.  We are trying to have most of the work completed in this intersection before September 3, when School starts back up.

Downtown Water Project Update:  8/2/19

The Main Street Water Main Contractor, Biszko, finished installing by-pass piping for the Main Street project last week and started the disinfection process.

The Summer Street Contractor, Vozzello, will mobilize Monday, 8-5-19, and start excavating pits on Tuesday, in Main Street for Biszko, starting at Summer Street.

Biszko will assist Vozzello and begin the Summer Street temporary by-pass piping, starting Tuesday or Wednesday and continuing into Thursday.

Biszko may begin water pipe cleaning and lining on Main Street during the week of 8-12-19.

Downtown Water Project Update:   7-30-19

(Tuesday morning) The Summer Street westbound travel lane will be temporarily closed for approximately 2 hours starting at 9 AM.  Westbound traffic will be detoured down Main Street to Route 135 near Materese Funeral Home.   Traffic traveling down Summer Street towards downtown will not be detoured.

Thank you for your patience.

1.  Main Street Water Main Cleaning and Lining

For the upcoming workweek (7/29 - 8/2):  The Contractor, Biszko Contracting Corp., will be finishing the water bypass installation in and around downtown.  When the installation is complete, the bypass will be filled with water and tested.

Next week (8/5 - 8/9), Biszko will start connecting the water services to the commercial establishments, residential units and town building along Main Street.  Roadway construction should start that week.

2.  Summer Street Water Main Replacement

Summer Street will also need a temporary water main bypass.  This work should start within the next two weeks.

Overall, the impacts to the traffic will be minimal on Main Street and Summer Street at this time.  If you have any questions, please contact Dan Maurer at dmaurer@ashlandmass.com.

Thank you,

The Department of Public Works
