I’ve been hearing a lot about “Tax Titles.” What does this mean?
When a taxpayer becomes delinquent in paying real estate taxes or other local charges that constitute liens on real estate, the town has statutory authority to take title to the taxpayer’s property and, subsequently, to undertake proceedings to foreclose the owner’s rights to redeem that property from tax title. Once the town completes the foreclosure in Land Court, the property becomes a “tax possession” of the town.
