Treasurer/Collector - Liens

  • When a taxpayer becomes delinquent in paying real estate taxes or other local charges that constitute liens on real estate, the town has statutory authority to take title to the taxpayer’s property and, subsequently, to undertake proceedings to foreclose the owner’s rights to redeem that property from tax title. Once the town completes the foreclosure in Land Court, the property becomes a “tax possession” of the town.

  • Any person with an ownership interest in a tax title property can redeem that property with the Treasurer at any time until a petition to foreclose has been granted in the Land Court by paying all of the outstanding taxes, interest and other charges due on the property. A payment agreement can also be made with the Treasurer in order to prevent foreclosure. You should contact the Treasurer to schedule an appointment.
    Treasurer/Collector - Liens
  • Properties acquired through tax foreclosure are not available for outright purchase. The town periodically reviews the properties acquired through tax foreclosure and will schedule and advertise auctions as required. You may also contact the Treasurer’s office for more information.
